Drivers
Like all of our products, we have selected our driver complement based purely on subjective performance and continued reliability. The few drivers we stock (of the hundreds available) we have found to consistently outperform those available elsewhere.

NORTH D25-06S 25mm Silk Dome Tweeter - a 1" silk dome designed by George Short and manufactured exclusively for North Acoustics division of North Creek Music Systems. This tweeter features 1mm peak-peak excursion, a low resonance, high power handling, and frequency response contouring that makes it simple to cross over. For more details, click here for .pdf
North D25-06S, introductory price …$ 36.00 per matched pair.
SCAN-SPEAK D2905/9500: An upgraded version of the /9300, with a thicker, flush-mount flange and the aerodynamic rear chamber for the /9900 Revelator. Similar to the /9300 in sound quality, but with a slightly lower resonance. Provided in "soft matched" pairs (± 1.5dB before break in) at no additional charge.
SCAN-SPEAK D2905/9500 $discontinued.
(perfect pairs add $30 per pair).
NORTH D28-06S 28mm Silk Dome Tweeter - a 1" silk dome designed by George Short, also a North Acoustics exclusive. The D28 is unique in that it is the only tweeter in the world to incorporate a Faraday Sleeve into its motor structure, resulting in the lowest distortion ever measured in a dome tweeter. 1mm peak-peak excursion, a low resonance, high power handling, and 92dB sensitivity. Click here for more details.

SCAN-SPEAK D2905/9900 Revelator: A "maxed-out" version of the original Scan-Speak D2905/9500, with a unique magnet structure and Faraday Cap, plastic coated voice coil and no magnetic fluid. The face plate controls dispersion below 2kHz to make integration with larger woofers seamless. 1mm peak-peak excursion allows for a low crossover frequency. The Revelator is the fastest and most detailed dome tweeter on the market. Provided in "soft matched" pairs (± 1dB after break in) at no additional charge.

Aurum Cantus G1 Ribbon: Transformer driven, pure aluminum ribbon driver with 100dB sensitivity and a flat 8-Ohm impedance. By far the best sounding small ribbon ever built, the G1 has a level of resolution that redefines the high end in High End. Very picky about crossover components and slopes, should be crossed over no lower than 1800 Hz at 12dB per octave. Found in some loudspeakers over $80k per pair. Used in both of our flagship systems, the North Manifest and North Prometheus.
AURUM CANTUS G1 RIBBON $ discontinued.
North 13W-06S: Cast frame, hard paper cone, nylon dust cap, rubber surround. The cone is ventilated below the dust cap for increased power handling. The motor is completely magnetically shielded. Frequency response contouring greatly simplifies the crossover design. This is a great little 5" for acoustic suspension cabinets and excellent for line arrays. See the North Echo loudspeaker kit.
North 13W-06S …$ 14.00 each; $144 matched 12
(perfect pairs add $30, perfect quads as $70).
Vifa P13WH-00-08: Made by the most popular manufacturer in high end audio, this driver represents an excellent balance between performance and price. It is a 5" polypropylene cone unit with a cast magnesium basket, nylon dust cap, rubber surround, and very large magnet. Subjectively, the low end is quite good for a 5" and the midrange is superb. Provided in "soft matched" pairs (± 1.5dB before break in) at no additional charge. Our averagee T/S parameters for thoroughly broken in units over the last couple years are: Fs = 74.93 Hz, Qts = 0.372, Qes = 0.4155, Qms = 1.41, Vas = 6.40 liters. These are significantly different than the manufacturer's specs but are consistent with stock. Shielding is available. See the Okara II - Ikemo - Eska family.

SCAN-SPEAK 15W/8530K-00SC Custom made 5" woofer with "grasshopper" basket, a radially slit paper cone, long throw, and enormous magnet structure. These are new drivers as of November 1999. We have been working with them since then, and they promise to be the most detailed, dynamic driver yet from Scan-Speak (although they do not go anywhere near as deep as the 7" units). Our average Theile-Small parameters are: Fs = 36 Hz, Qts = 0.40, Qes = 0.42, Qms = 7.61, Vas = 16 liters. Xmax = 13mm p-p linear, 18mm p-p maximum. Recommended in sealed boxes as small as 5 liters, vented boxes in 16 to 20 liters.

North 19W-06S: 7" woofer with a woven Kevlar® cone, textile dust cap and rubber surround. Heavy cast frame and a fully shielded motor make this driver ideal for AV systems, and the high DCR suits it perfectly for MTM's. An acoustic suspension or aperiodically damped cabinet is recommended. Superb resolution through the midrange and frequency response contouring leads to a very simple crossover. This driver has found its way in the CM-7 family of loudspeaker kits.

SCAN-SPEAK 18W/8545SC: 7" woofer with a carbon fiber impregnated paper cone, inverted dust cap, stacked magnet motor, linear suspension, SD-1 magnet structure and extremely long throw. Excellent low end and superb midrange. Provided in "soft matched" pairs (± 1.5dB before break in) at no additional charge. T/S parameters of thoroughly broken in units over the last couple years average: Fs = 34.08 Hz, Qts = 0.3565, Qes = 0.4035, Qms = 3.0665, Vas = 32.4 liters. These numbers are very consistent, with Fs variation generally less than 3 Hz. See the Borealis, Rhythm and Manifest loudspeakers.

As part of our regular QC procedure, all North, Vifa P13's and Scan-Speak drivers are tested before break in for frequency response (above 380 Hz) and impedance performance within acceptable limits. We then re-pack the drivers along with their curves as "soft matched" pairs, that is, matched within ± 1.5dB. This is twice as tight as the industry production standard of ± 3dB, if they are tested at all. Drivers that can not be matched are held until a match is found from a later shipment. We will not ship untested drivers or those that do not match our performance criteria.
For perfect pair matching, tweeters are broken in with 24 hours of pink noise, while woofers receive this along with 24 hours of a 25 Hz 1/3 octave warble tone. Perfect pairs are matched to within ± 0.5dB and provided with anechoic 2pi frequency response and free air impedance curves. Woofers are also provided with T/S parameters.
